From St Peter's to St. Paul's Outside the Walls

Leaving the "embrace" of Bernini's colonnade you turn right into Borgo Santo Spirito, which gives its name to the stational church of Santo Spirito in Sassia. After the stational church of San Lorenzo in Piscibus you come to Piazza della Rovere, where Via della Lungara begins. It dates to the 16th century and was built, like its twin, Via Giulia, on the other side of the river, under Julius II. Half way along the street stands the Renaissance Palazzo della Farnesina. It is certainly worth a visit as it is decorated with frescos by Raphael and other famous artists of the time. At this point you have reached the old district of Trastevere. Via della Scala leads to a beautiful square where one of the most ancient places of Christian worship in Rome is found - the early Christian basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. From here you cross Viale Trastevere and continue towards the river and over the Sublicio bridge, which leads to the district of Testaccio. Straight on, at the end of Via Marmorata, is the pyramid that Caius Cestius ordered built in the first century BC. A few steps further along is the beginning of the Via Ostiense (the Ostian Way), the road that eventually leads to the sea.

After a couple of kilometers in this direction, this itinerary ends at Saint Paul's Outside the Walls, the largest patriarchal basilica after St. Peter's. There are two variants to the second itinerary:

a) The first involves heading from Trastevere to the Janiculum hill and includes a visit to the church of San Pietro in Montorio and the adjoining Tempietto by Bramante.

b) The second begins at Santa Maria in Trastevere and takes you through the district to the basilica of Santa Cecilia. Across the river stand the ancient Arch of Janus and the basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. From here you can climb up the Aventine hill to the early Christian church of Santa Sabina.
