Monuments in Rome

Gianicolo

Above Trastevere is the Gianicolo Hill with spectacular views over Rome and statues commemorating the heroes of the Risorgimento, including Garibaldi and his wife Anita. Here there is also Bramante's exquisite (ITAL)tempietto (beside San Pietro in Montorio) built in 1502 it was Rome's first Renaissance building and was inaccurately believed to stand on the site where St Peter was crucified. The nearby fontana S. Paolo which looks like the façade of a church, dates from the early 17th century and is fed by an ancient Roman aqueduct.
