Castel Sant'Angelo

Back in front of Palazzo Braschi you can take one of two routes. Either turn right down Corso Vittorio Emanuele and, passing Chiesa Nuova which was built in 1605 for Filippo Neri, founder of the Oratorians, and which contains early works by Rubens, make towards Ponte Vittorio Emanuele to cross the river to the Vatican and St Peter's (see Vatican section for details).Turning right over the bridge takes you to Castel Sant'Angelo at the end of Ponte Sant'Angelo with its angels of the Passion designed by Bernini (currently under restoration). The Castel has a long history: starting off as the 2nd century tomb of Hadrian, it was used as a papal fortress, palace and prison from the Middle Ages and is now a museum containing some spectacular trompe l'oeil frescoes from the 16th century.
