The clear waters of the Lake Bracciano lie just a few kilometres from Rome, right in the heart of Italy. They are surrounded by lush vegetation and bear witness to centuries of history and art.
Clear waters
Way back in Roman Times the waters from Lake Bracciano were already directed into the ancient aqueduct, built by Trajan to be used as drinking water. The River Arrone is the lake’s only tributary and it still represents the major supply of water for the entire capital. Surrounded by the greenery of woods and dense olive groves, Lake Bracciano is the second largest expanse of water in Lazio, after Lake Bolsena, and is home to numerous species of wildlife and plant life.
Art and history in its old Mediaeval towns
There are three towns that stand on the shores of the lake: Bracciano itself, where there is an imposing 16th century castle housing a myriad of splendid works-of-art, Trevignano Romano, dominated by the ruins of the Rocca degli Orsini, and the Renaissance town of Anguillara Sabazia. Further inland there are other towns such as Vicarello, renowned since Roman Times for its spa baths (its ancient name was “Acquae Apollinares”), and Martignano which, together with the town of Bracciano hosts and gives its name to the regional park. The whole area abounds in well-preserved archaeological remains from Etruscan settlements and the ruins of Roman villas and has a wealth of evidence of its Mediaeval and Renaissance past.
Outdoor tourism and sport
The unspoilt natural surroundings and the clear waters of the lake make it an excellent place to take part in interesting outdoor activities and sports. For those who like to enjoy both, the ideal solution is to hire a mountain-bike and ride along the lakeside paths and admire the outstanding natural views. A lot of people also go sailing and boats can also be hired by simple amateurs.
Eating by the Lake
Naturally enough, the cuisine of the Bracciano area includes special dishes linked to the local resources. The main protagonist, therefore, is fish - in particular perch, European whitefish and eel - as well as game, broccoli and mushrooms, all served at table, of course, with a glass of excellent local white wine.
