The Circeo promontory, the forest of Sabaudia, the coastal dunes and the lakes of Fogliano, Monaci, Caprolace and Paola together make up this national park, set up in 1934. The grottoes which perforate the costline along the promontory are interesting from a paleethnological point of view. The remains of Circeo Man, as well as a number of handmade articles, have been discovered here. The roads across the dunes and up to the summit of the promontory facilitate a visit to the area by car while the excellent network of paths enables one to gain a deeper understanding of nature in the Park.
There is a rich array of bird wildlife in the four lakes, in particular the cormorants who winter there in large numbers and the many species of birds of passage. The expanses of water scattered over the forest of Sabaudia must have been an integral feature of the landscape in the Pontine Marshes before they were drained. San Felice Circeo and Sabaudia are the most convenient bases for exploring the Park.
